Default Ready to scream

There are days when I am ready to freak out on someone. It seems that I am trying to tell them something and they`re insisting on chattering like a mindless robot. Gets so that I want to hit them with something, grab them by the ears and scream very loudly to shut up and hear me out.

Today was one of them. The guy I was working with is being trained by me. He kept interrupting and then would try to talk over me. I had had enough of him at this point as very simple tasks are becoming very complicated with him and to add insult to injury, we`re on a limited time schedule. When we don`t meet schedule, I have to explain to the boss and he does the same thing.

I finally told the guy today to `let me finish please` and to me, it sounded like I was talking through gritted teeth. Had to do this a few times. Was really pissing me off. Spoke with another co-worker and she had the same issue with him so I know it is not me. The sad part is that the stuff I was training him on (or shall I say 'trying to train him on'), was the same stuff I had trained him on last week and the week before. And yes, it was also the same stuff that both of my other co-workers were trying to train him on as well. What really pissed me off is that he would then do the job correctly, and then about fifteen minutes later, would be asking the same questions and it`s back to square one and I have too many other things that need to be done as well.

I wonder if either he is playing stupid to get out of pulling his fair share of the load (which I`m not letting him get away with), or this guy is deliberately causing trouble?

Either way, I`m keeping a log. Yes, I have to work with him again tomorrow and if this happens again, I am putting in an official complaint to the office and telling them in plain terms that I don`t want to work with him any more. Fortunately I`m licensed (he`s not), so hopefully this will carry weight. My other two co-workers have stated the same thing and one of them is of the same ethnic and religious background as this guy so he can`t scream racist.

Sorry for the long vent but at least it`s off my chest... for now.

Hell no apologies and keep venting as necessary! As this would make many people in a similar situation know that it is more common than anyone would ever think it to be. Also, this could be looked as a work relations case study.

If to give a benefit of any doubt: there are people who definitely lack listening skills but also are too impatient when it comes to sitting there receiving instructions (temptation to talk over others is so great). They can do the work but definitely need reminders to do it properly again and again even if done already right the first time. If that is indeed the case then your and your coworker's training style and his learning style are not meshing. Also note that it takes people time to get accustomed to different working environments and workers he was not used to in previous jobs.

If ok to ask: do you guys have manuals or certain quick tips/faqs or work stickies to remind him of things at his designated workstation so that he does not have to ask people repeatedly? Or (I remember at one workplace) to pass the buck i.e. if you are too busy or even feel very disrespected have him ask someone else who is less busy.

Also bosses and even HR department tend to forget about how training new people especially those that need extra support/validation often delay production in the beginning.

Now of course if it becomes apparent if you have tried everything and nothing then yep do what you got to do. More so if you don't notice any change no matter how insignificant i.e. asking less questions, paying attention better.

Sorry if it doesn't help but this is a good vent and if you have found a great solution(s) then by all means POST IT.

Unfortunately we have to travel to different sites throughout the day so there are no manuals or sticky notes that can be used to remind this guy. And we`re badly short staffed so again, I can`t seem to have the ability to foist this guy off on someone else.

On Friday, I again had to remind him of something when he almost caused an accident. I spoke with the boss but he just hung up on me and would not even speak with me so talking to the boss has proven to be a waste of time. He left the site and I had to finish everything on my own for our first site. To add insult to injury, the manager called me to ask why I didn`t get the second site done and I pointed out that what had to be done is a two man job. Again, my complaint fell on deaf ears and yes, this guy also hung up on me. Sad part is that I have to work with this idiot tomorrow and I`m dreading it. Sad really as I love my job and it sucks to be dreading going in to work.

For now, I`m job hunting as it was made very clear to me the boss has no respect for me. I know my other two co-workers are doing the same so I know the problem is not me. As for training styles, yeah, if his way of training is to keep talking over the trainer and not listening, then yes, there is no hope of me training. I`ve trained many other people before and one thing that is needed in the style I use is that the trainee has to listen. Yes, I don`t mind questions, in fact I welcome them, but in order for me to pass on what I know, the person has to be listening.

Too bad that there are not enough complaints against your non-listening co-worker to have him transferred or something. Maybe, get lucky and he would leave or get fired. Does the boss have any networking connection with him?
Really too bad that made you go job hunting to leave a job you once loved.

I know how you feel about not wanting to report to work tomorrow. I feel like this right now.

The main connection that the boss has with him is that they`re the same religion. Another insult is that this guy is making the same pay as me and he`s not even licensed.

Well, today was another one and I repeated my complaint to the manager. Told him this is ridiculous as I want to get the work done properly but this guy is making it impossible. I even stated that if this garbage continues, I may have to submit my resignation.

I was in for a surprise. Turns out four other workers made the same statement. And yes, the boss is considering on firing the guy finally. Turns out the guys making the complaints had the same things to say and yes, two of the threatened to quit. Fine. We`ll see what happens but at this point, my resume is up to date and I`m job hunting.
