Default Ghana success.

I have to hold my hands up and say I made an error.

Previously, I had said that when Nigeria narrowly missed qualification for the last 16 stage of the World Cup the last African hope in the competition had gone. I had stupidly forgot about Ghana!!!

Ghana finished 2nd in Group D to Germany, who only managed to beat the Ghanians 1-0 yesterday evening. Thus, Ghana are very much in with a shout of progressing in the competition as they meet the USA. Both teams have an attractive, attacking style of play, so it is a game that I look forward to on Saturday evening (17:30 GMT).

Soccer has been my life since I first saw George Best grace N.Ireland's international team when I was a young boy. It is unusual for me to get my facts wrong as I pride myself in having an encyclopedic, if not fanatic interest in "the beautiful game".

The Ghanaians played well, and they deserve the spot in the top 16. The first time the World Cup has had respresentation from Africa. No doubt, they lost to Germany in the group stage, but Congrats to them!

@Black_Dog
In response to your other post in the now-closed 'World Cup' thread (to which I have no idea why it was closed..):

Hahah.. yea, sort of keeping the options open but I like to observe the teams rather than go full out on egging on 1 individual team - there are SO many individual talents in each team, so kudos to all of them :)

Cheers!

P.S. Italy vs Slovakia in a hour's time from the time of this post! Woo! *Excitement*

Slovakia 3 - Italy 2

Shock result this.

The reigning World champions dumped out by a lesser nation.
Slovakia won the World Cup preliminary group that my native N. Ireland were in.

Italy had a goal disallowed and a goal line clearance by a Slovakian defender looked suspiciously over the goal line. All in all, Italy's luck had run out. You MUST have luck on your side to win this competition.

Italian football is not as good as it used to be; it's league is diluted by foreign players. The Champions League may have been won by the Italian side, Inter Milan (who beat Barcelona in the final), but on that night Inter did not field even ONE Italian player!!!

They same problem takes place in all the major leagues in Europe. The presence of foreign players in the leagues means each nation does not have enough home bred talent getting top class football. The result: weakened international sides in Italy, England, Germany and France.

My Oh My.. Slovakia 3 - 2 Italy..

What an emotional game.. as the defending champions Italy got eliminated..

I really feel that the disallowed-goal with ball on the line has been justified correctly. fairly. Skrtel's knee did knock it out before it had passed the line.

Vittek's goals were well deserved. However the preparation and game-making for the goals didn't have much excitement and energy as the last World Cup.. it certainly lacked in appeal. But when the goals were scored, you could feel the excitement and suspense.. especially when Italy scored their 2nd, and almost scored a 3rd.. rendering the benched Italy players and officials at the edge of their seats!

=D

(HALF-TIME) Brazil 0 - 0 Portugal.

Pepe (Portugal) is a very dirty player. Nilmar (Brazil) is a good skillful, clean player.

I'm hoping Portugal scores, but Brazil might get to it first with their stronger attack.

and GO JAPAN! Awesome Goals, Huge Spirits!~

Yes, the game wasn't very exciting. It's very likely that both teams are preserving their energies for future games and were certainly well aware they'll still be in the World Cup, so were playing for a draw.

We'll see when the later matches come, I'm sure the excitement will increase. Also, the unpredictability of some teams in this World Cup add some mysteriousness to it all and certainly creates some underlying excitement.

Ronaldo seems selfish with the ball, and over-confident. He thinks he can score from those distances without passing to anyone?? C'mon..
