Basically, set yourself up near an outlet for your power and ensure the desk is sturdy, level with enough space for your soldering iron and equipment. It also helps if you have a work light. One can be made or purchased. My work light was made from one of those warehouse lights that is shaped like a bowl. Great lighting for the work at hand.
Have a stand for your iron (pretty easy to make or purchase), keep a wet cloth handy for cleaning and tinning your iron. Helps if you have some ventilation and be absolutely sure you`re not too close to the smoke alarm as you can set it off while working.
Hope this helps and sorry for the late chime in.
