So I'm a graduate student studying Bioinformatics, which means I can comment on this with some knowledge.

I find the press on this to be a bit hyperbolic. They didn't create life from scratch, by any stretch. They just did what we already knew we could do, even though they were the first to actually do it. lol, let me explain...

Currently scientists often do genetic engineering, which means they synthetically create a specific sequence that codes for a gene or group of genes. They insert this into the genome of an organism and that organism then obtains the additional functionality. Is this "creating life from scratch" - not really because they are just modifying life.

Next, scientist have developed the technique to remove the genome from a cell and insert another genome into that cell. This is what is done in cloning. Is this "creating life from scratch?" Not really, because you need a cell which has all the complex machinery necessary for life and you are just swapping genomes.

In this case, the scientists artificially assembled the entire genome of a known bacteria (making a few modifications) and inserted it into the cell of another bacteria. So they created a genome from scratch, though they used natural blueprints. They inserted that artificially made genome into a cell - and cool enough, it created a viable organism.

What I think people miss, often, is that any modern genome has evolved inside a cell host over several billion years. Modifying a genome will modify the offspring of the cell in which that genome resides, however, outside of a cell a genome is meaningless.

We still have a long way to go to understand the entire genome of even the simpliest organisms, much less the incredible complexity of the cellular machinery which is based on that genome, interacts with it and is what really drives life.
