Default Professor communication

Now that I'm in my major coursework, I don't have classes with 500 people. I am with 18 and will have 2 teachers for the rest of my college career. I want to know if it's a good idea to tell one that I'm having some personal problems and I'm afraid that one thinks I just don't really care about school because I haven't put a lot of work in, even though my grades are fine. But I'm paranoid about it and I don't want her to think my work is bad due to the fact that I don't care. I don't know what to really say to her though. I know teachers form opinions of their students right away and that sticks...what would good to tell her, if anything?

20, I don't know if any advice I can give will be 'right'. I found that talking with the instructors who I had to work with a lot was beneficial after I had felt them out a bit and decided they were trustworthy. Otherwise if I had to tell them it was something I did as a formality to let them know that my condition might hamper my participation, and to please be understanding of my situation. I think there were a few I never told because of their general immaturity and seeming insolence toward their adult students whose lives might be complex and not always totally school focused. I think if you feel you can trust your instructors that it is helpful to share that you have a condition that can get in the way of your seeming to be the top student. I'm afraid my advice tonight is clouded by too much of life's challenges and an extremely low tolerance to alcohol so please bare with me. I don't know if that helps any...? (hugs)
We have to become creative problem solvers, not just tolerant burden barers.
