I have to take Statistics this year and my professor is being a pain. I'll give her some credit because this is her first year teaching but I sometimes wonder if she knows what she's doing. Her homework system works like this; all homework from the week before is due every Tuesday. Last week, she said that we were supposed to make 5 graphs on the same set of data and passed out instruction sheets. And she got at least one of the directions wrong.

Today, we were about to leave class for the day and, almost as an afterthought, she said 'oh, last week, I forgot to pass out your homework.' and she proceeded to put up at least 50 problems on the board and said that this is due Thrusday. We were staring around dumbfounded, because we had that huge graphing project to do. I actually asked her why we couldn't have this due next week and she replied, 'because I want this all in before your exam this week.'

Ugh. That kind of stuff is always frustrating. I suppose part of the reason why she might have done this could be due to the fact that she has already made up your exams; or she has in mind what she wants on your exams, considering that she has had little experience with making exams, she might be little too uncomfortable with changing her plans on a whim. Regardless, considering that it was an oversight on her part, she should somehow give your class the benefit of the doubt. (Then again, she might not see it as an oversight on her if she thinks that her students should be responsible for reminding her of these sorts of things. Though, I do think that considering that it is early in the semester--or do you have marking periods?--everyone is still adjusting to their routines, thus everyone forgets things easily.) Maybe you could suggest to her that if the majority of the class does not do well on the exam problems relating to the stuff that was hastily assigned, you should not have those problems count against you (and receive extra credit if you did those problems correctly).

I'm crying right now because I'm still trying to figure out how to do this graphing project. I tried talking to my Dad, who makes graphs all the time and e-mailed him a copy of the instructions and he can't make heads or tails of it.

I've had assignments reduce me to tears, too. I just hate giving up on something even though I may not understand it...I know wouldn't have felt quite so terrible about those sorts of things if I wasn't worrying about a grade, but considering that I'm a perfectionist and somewhat stubborn (and I feel pressure to do well because I'm smart and responsible), I just felt horrible not being able to do something because I didn't understand it. Considering that someone who is experienced with graphs isn't able to figure out how to do your assignment, your classmates may be in the same boat as you...but I know from experience that that thought doesn't necessarily help with any anxiety.

I always felt uncomfortable taking classes that were taught by new teachers. I know that everyone has to start somewhere, but I never really seemed that forgiving in that regard. :(

I wish that there was something I could do, because I know what your going through sure isn't enjoyable.

Thank you...maybe talking to her tomorrow about the graphing project will help matters.
