My Vietnam Vet brother passed 4/11/11

It's been little over 2 yrs.my Marine Viet Nam Veteran brother passed but I can't let go, I talk to his picture. He wanted me to have his leather biker jacket, I hung it on the extra freezer door and it's still there, I hug it. You know how leather forms to the shape of your body? well it's shaped just like him, his arms. When he went to nam, I was 3 he came back and left, went out west, I really didn't get to know him until 1996, after that we talked a lot, he said we were the same more than the other siblings. I miss him sooo much! People keep telling me I need to move the jacket, but I just cant' that would, be like forgetting him, and I never will.

I am so sorry. I know how you're feeling. I lost my brother in Jan this year, he'd been ill with liver disease for six weeks and I saw him suffer. He wasn't ever forty. I know how awful the grief can be. Have you had any bereavement counselling? I've been to two sessions and these are helping, just talking to someone who is sympathetic. Don't move your leather jacket, if it gives you comfort, only move it when you feel able to begin to move on. The only thing I will say, is that with it still there, it maybe holding you back from moving on. Certainly though, this is your decision and others should respect your choice to need to keep it there at the minute. You won't forget him as you have the memories in your mind. Inanimate objects, whilst sentimental, are not the same.

I have a lot of memories that I feel I would lose if I got rid of the physical reminders that I have of them. If keeping his leather jacket there like that helps, then keep it. There is something almost reverent to me about the things that connect us to the past. Though balance with the present and going forward is important, I don't think we need to leave the past behind. I'm sorry he passed out of this life, that it has left the hole in your heart.
