Professor Z's Basic Computer Thingology Guide.
Professor Z’s Basic Computer Thingology Guide.

Hello I am Professor Z and I am going to teach you a little bit about taking care of your PC.
You know that most people do not take care of their proper PC and a lot of hassle can be saved by maintaining your PC? A PC is just like a car, it needs to be repaired every now and again, the hardware usually lasts a long time but the software and operating system needs constant maintenance, at least weekly. If you don’t you run this risk of being exposed to harmful viruses, annoying adware and potentially financially devastating spyware. There are things called key loggers that can be installed on your system and log each and every one of your key strokes, these can be used to steal your credit card number and other sensitive information. I am going to give you some helpful tips and tricks to keep your computer safe and running smooth. Please note I am probably going to add stuff to this guide so stay tuned!

Important notice! Save Net Neutrality!
Net Neutrality is being threatened in the US and Canada. Go to these sites to see how you can help save the internet!
US: Google Savetheinternet.com

Canada: neutrality.ca

What is net neutrality?

Net neutrality is like the first amendment of the internet. It states that isps (internet service providers) cannot discriminate between web sites and how fast they load. If isps have their way they could limit or even block sites who do not pay them royalties. Web sites like our beloved TTL would suffer devastating effects from the removal of net neutrality. What are you waiting for? ACT!
Please note this guide is designed for Windows XP users and some of the information here may only pertain to the XP operating system. This guide is for Microsoft Windows users only.

Thanks to Straw's brilliant idea I got my superhero certification.

More coming when I get around to it.

I. Things you should read so I don't have to tell you over and over.

This is the part of the guide where I post stuff I think you should read before asking me any questions. This information will better help me help you.

First of all the format object1>object2>object3 and so forth is a way of writing computer instructions. What it means is navigate to object1 then 2 then 3 by clicking or hovering or whatever you need to do to get there. For instance start>program files>accessories>paint is a guide to open MS paint. I will use this format to tell you how to access things.

Chapter 1: Tips an’ tricks for windows machines.

To make sure your operating system is fully up to date, update often at the Windows updates website.

Eternal computing:
I know a lot of you like to leave your computers on all the time. Did you know leaving them on all the time can cause problems? You see Windows is stored on your hard drive, the long term permanent memory for your computer, stuff stored on it stays around even after shutdown.
When Windows is loaded it is loaded, it goes into RAM (random access memory). Ram is your computer’s short term memory, when the computer is turned off everything in ram disappears.
As a computer runs it has little errors, these errors build up over time and cause your system performance to drop. You can easily remedy this with restarting your computer every week or shutting it down when you are not using it. You see when you restart or reboot your computer a fresh version of Windows is loaded into your RAM, so there are no longer the pesky errors there that build up over time.

You need to defragment your computer every so often because windows mixes up the files that are stored on your hard disk. The files on the hard disk get corrupted and fragmented all over your disk. After all a disk is a physical storage device. The fragmentation of files is obviously bad and it causes problems. To remedy this just defragment every so often. Every few months (at least once or twice a year) is fine depending on how much data ya go through.
To defrag go to: Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter
Once you run the defragmenter just click the defragment button and leave the computer alone until it is done defragmenting.

Security tips:
Don’t download anything from a questionable site. If they site does not look legit, it probably isn’t. Do not give out personal information unless absolutely necessary. There are many sites out there that try to dupe you into entering your personal information for some bogus prize. Beware faux sites. Always check the URL (web address such as http://www.google.com) Of the web page your are on. There are fake sites out there that copy site such as Ebay or Paypal to steal your information so make sure it is the real site’s URL. Do not open suspicious emails, they may be infected.

Purdy colors:
Ever want to change the style or color of your windows in Windows?
Right click on your desktop and click properties, then click on the appearance tab in that window. From this tab you can edit the appearance of Window’s, well, windows, and change your font size.

Task bar mania:
Ever want to move the task bar(the little bar at the bottom of your screen)? Well you can!
Just click on an empty space that isn’t taken up by a program button and drag it to the side of yours screen you want it in. If it wont move right click on it and uncheck the check mark by lock the task bar. If you want to lock your task bar in place simply click on the option again. For more advanced task bar properties, right click on the task bar and click properties.

Easy keyboard short cuts:
Ctrl+A is a shortcut to select all.
Ctrl+C is a shortcut to copy.
Ctrl+S saves the current document in the window you have selected.
Ctrl+X is a shortcut to cut.
Ctrl+V is a shortcut to paste.
Alt+F4 closes your current window.

In most web browsers Ctrl+N opens up a new window.
(Credit to: Mousey)
This suggestion will probably be helpful to those members who do not wish people to know about their use of this site.

In IE 7 and Fire Fox you can press Ctrl+T to open a new tab.

Chapter 2: Viruses, intrusions and spyware.

Right now your computer could be full of harmful content that could be slowing it down, damaging it or even threatening your privacy. Odds are you probably do have some spyware on your computer, usually benign, spyware is mostly used by companies to get information on the sites you visit but it can be used to log every key stroke you make and steal personally information. How can you protect yourself against these threats you might ask? Well there is a simple answer to that, go buy security software, I recommend Norton system suite. “Well I don’t have the money to buy any.

irishred 12-21-06 05:07 PM

question from Angel4Peace

I have many wonderful pic's but they are bmp, not jpg or gif
IS there a way to change a bmp to a jpg or gif?
I tried just changing the name and that just destroyed the pic
I have the most beautiful christmas house I want to post.. but cannot
So, If anyone an help I would appreicate it
Thanks for all of your love and support

She posted this in Inspirational Pictures.

Zetsumei 12-21-06 05:38 PM

Go to start>all programs>accessories>paint

In paint go to the bar menu on the top of the screen go to file>open then open the picture you want to change go to file>save as then save it as whatever file name you want and then put the file extension after it you want and click save.

The object1>object2>object3 format means go to object1 then go to object2(on a menu most of the time) then object3 and so on.

irishred 12-21-06 05:55 PM

thanks, Z! i'll paste it where she asked the question, too. you rock!

irishred 12-21-06 09:45 PM

Z - here's another one for ya~~!

Irishred I got a for you. Z taught me to put the picture of my little dog with my sign in. But how do you put a piture out on display for everyone to see it? I put pictures in the photobucket.com so they are public so I can use them in here. But I tried to paste the URL code and nothing works. I don't want to change my picture of my little dog I only want to add a picture in the message screne like I have seen in here. HELP!!! Please if you see Z in here.

Zetsumei 12-21-06 11:35 PM

Could ya have people come here and post Irish cause it is a lot less hassle just to talk to them.... Whom ever you are make sure you are copying and pasteing the url with the img tags around it the url you copy and paste should look like this: now the url isnt the exact one... of course or even close to it.. just make sure to select and copy the one with the img tags....

irishred 12-22-06 01:18 AM

Sure thing Z. I told her to come here to find your answer. I just posted the question for her. I think it was redcopgirl.

I need serious help,....I will need to contact my web designer,..because I am a moron :?

First off if anyone ever has computer problems just post in my thread... its much easier than searching all you people out just so I can help you :P Second off, you are not a moron, many people dont know how to do that... THIRDLY! This is how you do it.... Go to start then go to all programs then go to accessories then open paint... go to the file menu on paint and click open... browse for your file and open it... MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACK UP OF THE FILE IN A DIFFERENT LOCATION! Once you have the image open go to the image menu and click attributes... then you can change the size of the image... then click save as... change the .tiff at the end to a .jpg and click save and wala you can now upload it to ttl.

Ok... well this is for Jupiter cause she is having some troubles... I will work on a guide for image manipulation and hosting one of these days...

Jupiter 12-23-06 11:17 PM

Thanks Zets,...
I have the disc with my paintings on them,...I need to upload them onto my website,..but I have to change the size from tiff,..to jpg,..how do I do that??,...

Zetsumei 12-23-06 11:21 PM

Well... first off what kind of photo editing software do you have? Also.. can your web tech teach you? It would be much easier if it were someone familiar with the system.

Jupiter 12-23-06 11:25 PM

I don't even know what I have on this computer,....My website designer always uploaded my images,.but she has really sophisticated equipment,
I guess,..I will have to ask her,...I was just trying to do it on my own,..with my computer...but I don't think I have enough space on my computer,..to upload these images......

Zetsumei 12-23-06 11:29 PM

Yes if they have the answer it would be great... otherwise I will have to tell ya what to do.. where to go to get the proper programs ect... and its not fun... I had trouble getting the program you will need to work for me... Unless you have photo shop or another comparable photo editing software... hhmmm... however your art site is a business... that puts restrictions... hmm... yes best to talk to them. Edit: I would love to help with this but it will be a lot of work and I would rather someone who knows the system does it. The advice I would give would fall under man copy right laws... for instance I believe companies need to pay royalties to use a jpg format.

Zetsumei 01-03-07 04:36 AM

Guide has been updated with a little thing on how I explain navigation when I help ya. I may update the guide with a guide on graphics and image hosting on my trip back if my battery holds out. If you want any other guides please post here or pm me about what kinda guide ya want.

Zetsumei 01-13-07 02:47 AM

Guide updated, I added a porn section. Please read it before you pass judgment.

irishred 01-15-07 03:08 PM

Hey Z, thanks for the info last night. I updated the stuff today and ran defragmenting and whole bit. Thanks!!

Zetsumei 01-15-07 03:14 PM

Umm... You need to run the scan utilities in the anti-virus and anti-spyware programs you have... it isnt enough to just update them... It is good you defraged... I need to do that sometime soon... *-_- If you ran the scan utilities... then nvm.. lol...

irishred 01-15-07 03:16 PM

Yep, I ran those first. Then the defrag, now I'm doing the Windows updates. I am also going to run through those programs you have listed on the guide, just to be sure.

Zetsumei 01-15-07 03:18 PM

Irish you dont need those programs if you already have one... That is great you are getting all that stuff done thought. Your computer will thank you. ^_^

irishred 01-15-07 04:09 PM

Dang! I can't believe how much better my computer runs now!

Zetsumei 01-15-07 10:15 PM

See it pays to keep your computer maintained. Glad the guide helped. :)

irishred 01-24-07 09:42 PM

hey z

is there a way for pacman to send me some wav and mp3 files on this forum, either through pm's or something?

Zetsumei 01-24-07 09:47 PM

Directly through the pm no but if you found a hosting service yes.... unfortunately that service would probably be public and allow anyone with the link access to the information. The pm system on ttl does not have any way of attaching files. So you are stuck on that one. Perhaps create bogus email accounts to facilitate the file transfer if you wish to maintain anonymity.

irishred 01-24-07 09:48 PM

bogus email accounts sounds like the best possible way.

Mousey 03-07-07 12:11 PM

Funny how just last night I said I do have pc questions and will ask when I do....as I'm now having a problem.

For the first time, my AVG keeps popping up a "virus threat" warning, saying some file is infected and gives these options:

Move to Vault

I keep choosing heal and it says "object was successfully healed" but this is still popping up, every 60 seconds. It's not going away...what do I do??

Zetsumei 03-07-07 12:25 PM

What is the object name? Unless it is a vital program you should move it to the vault. You will loose the file but also loose the virus. Again, what is its name? I suggest using Zone Alarm and Adaware in conjunction with AVG to fully protect your computer if you are not already doing so.

Mousey 03-07-07 12:36 PM

Ummmm. It's in the temp files, some weird thing with codes(letters & numbers). And it's not every 60 seconds, it's only when I view another page.

Zone Alarm, is that another anti-virus? Why do I need 2 of them?

Zetsumei 03-07-07 12:40 PM

Zone Alarm is a firewall and protects your computer from intrusion. It is a program that limits other programs and computers access to your computer.

Next time that virus pops up just send it to the vault. The temp files are temporary files used by the system, they are not vital to anything, or at least shouldn't be and definitely not a virus.

Mousey 03-07-07 12:41 PM

Uh oh...wait. It's not on every website. It's only on one of my friends' sites of poems. I go there often but each time I view another poem I get the threat again. Could there be a virus on the site? What's this mean? This isn't good!

Zetsumei 03-07-07 12:47 PM

It is probably adware, what is the url of the web page? If you do not want to share it here that is fine you could pm me it. You don't have to but that is the only way I can get to the bottom of this... By the way, you should stop going to that site, make sure you have that malicious file off your computer and install Zone Alarm. What web browser do you use? I use Firefox because it is more secure than Internet Explorer.

Zetsumei 03-07-07 12:58 PM

Thank you for the pm. I believe it is a piece of adware that my k9 blocks. One of the ads on the bottom off the site was blocked and that means that they probably contained malware. I wouldn't think it is anything to serious, probably just some company trying to get your surfing records. You should alert your friend to this though. Anything else?

Oh also, please do visit the windows update site to make sure your computer is up to date. Are you going to install Zone Alarm? I highly recommend it.

By the way, the reason I have k9 installed is because I used to have a problem with Porn which I am utterly ashamed of but I have a loving girlfriend who helped me out of it. K9 is primarily a parental filter, you should look into it having a son and all. I am not saying he would go looking for it or is even at that stage but to keep him from being exposed.

Mousey 03-07-07 01:08 PM

Thanks Zets. You really do know your stuff!

Yeah I think I will get Zone Alarm. Thanks for your help....my friend just came online, he's checking into it now. Phew!

Mousey 03-07-07 01:37 PM

Well FFS, I feel like an idiot right now. I'm on the zonelabs site looking for the free dl, but I'm only seeing a 15 day free trial. Is this something we now have to pay for? Am I not seeing something? I've looked in each category hoping to not have to post a stupid question...but here we go!

Zetsumei 03-07-07 01:41 PM

Click here for the correct page.

Mousey 03-08-07 12:53 PM

Alright I dl'd ZoneAlarm yesterday but didn't fiddle with it as the blinking icon was bugging me. So, today I visited the same site and am now getting a warning from IE saying:

NOTICE: You have not completed the scan. If your computer has tracks of all adult sites you have visited and files that get installed by themsleves while you browsing, it can violate your online privacy and could complicate your career and marriage.
You need to clean uo all the temporary and history records of your computer to remove this tracks.

Would you like to install PrivacyProtector to scan for and, if found, clean these browsing tracks now? (Recommended)

The first time, I clicked OK, and my AVG detected a threat, so I moved it to the vault. Then I got the yellow warning about an ActiveX Control...it said the PrivacyProtector could not be verified by a publisher. If you'll notice in the above warning, there are typos and improper grammar....I did not make them myself LOL. SO....I'm very very confused. This is a site that I have visited many many many times. It's just a bunch of wonderful poems written by a very dear friend of mine. I really do not want to stop going there. And I don't know what to do about this problem. He hasn't found anything and neither have you, so why am I? There are no ads on the site, unless they're hidden????

Ugh...help.

Zetsumei 03-08-07 12:57 PM

Well from the sounds of it, it was an AD. So just make sure to scan with avg, remove all the shit and don't click on something like that again. :P You should also get Adaware and scan with that... that will get rid of all the malware and adware on your computer. So DO NOT click on things like that on web pages, they are fakes designed to install malicious software on your computer.

Mousey 03-08-07 01:04 PM

So by getting Adaware, it will remove the problem? I'll go and get it. Thanks for all your help. You rock!!

You know, I can see this thread getting to be 100 pages long.

Zetsumei 03-08-07 01:08 PM

Well if everyone posted here it probably would be to 25 or so but I get a lot of Pm's :P I dont really care as long as people get the help they need.

Now Adware free edition is a passive security measure, meaning you have to scan to detect things.

Jupiter 03-11-07 06:45 PM

Hi professor Z,..I and some other people from TTL are having problems putting the correct time in...because of daylight savings time,..we are all screwed up.. :? ...can you help us,..pleeeeeeeaaaasse!!!!!!!!

penismightier 03-11-07 06:51 PM

I didn't think you could set your own time on here. I thought it was just automatically set to Eastern time (and until it's updated, it's currently on Central time).

Jupiter 03-11-07 06:52 PM

No,..I think you can set your time,...if you go to profiles,..scroll down to the bottom,..you will se a setting for time,..I just don't know what I am doing..... :?

Mousey 03-11-07 06:59 PM

Yeah Jupes, you can change it in your profile. But I don't want to change it in case it's changed later automatically when daylight savings time usually is. I'm all screwed up.

Jupiter 03-11-07 07:02 PM

Yeah,..I know mousey,.I'm all screwed up as well,....I don't know what to do,..but,..I'm sure the professor will know,..I hope he stops by later....

Mousey 03-11-07 07:07 PM

I'm not sure if he's going to. Did you see his thread called ummmm...something about his craptop died? It's in Rants & Raves.

What are we going to do? What are we going to do!!??

Jupiter 03-11-07 07:10 PM

WHAT??? His computer died? No,..not the professor! I can't believe it!!
I will check this out!!!!

penismightier 03-11-07 07:15 PM

Oh, OK, I saw the time thing there now. It's in the GMT -n format. I don't think they have daylight savings time in the GMT zone, do they? We need one of the Brits here.

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 06:18 PM.
