I've been told by a doctor I have a 'loner' personality, but whether that means Avoidant Personality Disorder I don't know..

What does it mean to you?

There is something called Schizoid Personality Disorder:

Schizoid personality disorder (SPD) is a personality disorder characterized by a lack of interest in social relationships, a tendency towards a solitary lifestyle, secretiveness, and emotional coldness

So what is the difference between Avoidant and Schizoid? :S

(For myself I would strongly disagree with having a 'lack of interest'.. its just I have bad luck with these sorts of things *sadface*)

Avoidant Personality Disorder Symptoms
This disorder is characterized by a long-standing and complex pattern of feelings of inadequacy, extreme sensitivity to what other people think about them, and social inhibition. It typically manifests itself by early adulthood and includes a majority of the following symptoms:

  • avoids occupational activities that involve significant interpersonal contact, because of fears of criticism, disapproval, or rejection
  • is unwilling to get involved with people unless certain of being liked
  • shows restraint within intimate relationships because of the fear of being shamed or ridiculed
  • is preoccupied with being criticized or rejected in social situations
  • is inhibited in new interpersonal situations because of feelings of inadequacy
  • views self as socially inept, personally unappealing, or inferior to others
  • is unusually reluctant to take personal risks or to engage in any new activities because they may prove embarrassing
----------
Schizotypal Personality Disorder Symptoms
A pervasive pattern of social and interpersonal deficits marked by acute discomfort with, and reduced capacity for, close relationships as well as by cognitive or perceptual distortions and eccentricities of behavior, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:
  • ideas of reference (excluding delusions of reference)
  • odd beliefs or magical thinking that influences behavior and is inconsistent with subcultural norms (e.g., superstitiousness, belief in clairvoyance, telepathy, or "sixth sense"; in children and adolescents, bizarre fantasies or preoccupations)
  • unusual perceptual experiences, including bodily illusions
  • odd thinking and speech (e.g., vague, circumstantial, metaphorical, overelaborate, or stereotyped)
  • suspiciousness or paranoid ideation
  • inappropriate or constricted affect
  • behavior or appearance that is odd, eccentric, or peculiar
  • lack of close friends or confidants other than first-degree relatives
  • excessive social anxiety that does not diminish with familiarity and tends to be associated with paranoid fears rather than negative judgments about self

Thanks for the information.

hhm yep that sums it up pretty well. Avoidants also are very unused to physical and emotional closeness, fear it. Also, they may not always avoid relationships, but may drop out of one before it gets too close.

i scored for it - sort of new. i see it as an outgrowth of my anxiety disorder. i used to be very social, but even then shy and worried about how i seemed to others. i liked to go to parties and such, but only if i had close friends i could stay near.

do you have anxiety? it that where yours might come from as well?

i don't think you have to relate to everything stated above. for instance i do not fear emotional closeness and i am not unwilling to engage socially either,,,,,,,,,they have to 'sum up' in those descriptions. sometimes i may seem unwilling but it is a mixture of depression/anxiety.

for instance, someone calls and wants me to do something. i start thinking i don't have the energy, i don't have anything to wear, i won't have anything to say, she will not have fun with me because i am down......so i end up avoiding.

the only reason i am seeing someone is because he says 'i don't care' to all of that. otherwise i basically tried to push him away because i can't get my house clean, i can't get in a fun mood, etc.

but it was not because i actually wanted to push him away. does that make any sense?

Makes perfect sense Jessi :)

I do have anxiety problems. Especially socially. Fear of rejection, shame, embarrassment, exclusion. Dropped out of school because of it.

yeah, that pretty much sounds like me. Except I'm so withdrawn now, and have been for so long, that I don't need to avoid socializing very much. I just go about my life as a loner. It's not that I enjoy it or am afraid of socializing (I am, to a degree), but now I pretty much feel as if any alternative isn't/never was possible. I just feel like this is the way life is.

As lonely as I am, I'll remain like this forever.
