Ubuntu is actually a really safe and reliable alternative to the windows operating system. As we know there are many bugs and flaws in current and previous versions of Windows. Ubuntu is safe as it is not a target to most viruses/spyware and attacks that are mostly targetted to windows systems. One thing to keep in mind in whichever operating sytem is used to always update any software or system files needed in order to keep up with the latest and greatest security and to ensure that any bugs have been fixed. I am currently using XP on my main desktop and dual-booting between linux and XP on the laptop which gives me the best of both worlds. I'm excited and waiting for the 10.10 version of Ubuntu that is going to come out and it's supposed to be the perfect 10. Anyone else waiting for that release?

Hellz yeah. I'm thinking I'm probably going format and switch from Linux Mint to Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook edition for my Netbook, dual booting that next to Backtrack4 of course ;)

Ubuntu, Mac and any other Unix-based OS are a lot more secure than Windows because of the permissions system. Windows users are given Administrative privileges by default, meaning a malicious program on Windows has free reign to do whatever it wants pretty much. To do any serious damage on Unix you need Root User permissions, which unless you use a root account (bad idea) then your normal user account will not have these.

Ever tried to do anything to the system in Linux and have it ask you for your password? Well that's because it needs to grant you root permissions before you can do it.

Thanks for the info.

I've now been using Ubuntu for a while, and I like it much better than win. However, I have some problems with getting the sound to work sometimes. For some reason it does not find my soundcard..

Ok if you open a terminal, enter the following command:

alsamixer

This will open something that looks somewhat like a graphic equaliser. There should be an option to press F6 to select sound card. See if there is another device to switch too (probably HDA Intel), change to it , hit esc to exit and close the terminal. See if your sound is working now.

That helped. :) Thank you.
