Off my medication

I came off of my medication towards the end of last year (with doctor supervision & recommendation of course!), Iíve been on it for so many years that I donít know when I started. I felt okay coming off, no terrible side effects (there were some, but the effects were small), but thatís because I did slowly and with supervision. When I was on it sometimes Iíd miss a dose or run out, and Iíd get terrible shooting pains that felt like electric shocks. My emotions would be all over the place, and Iíd feel so hopeless. I think itís important to remember not to stop taking medication without consulting oneís doctor, I can tell you this first hand.

Iím starting to feel a bit crappy once more, I think itís because Iím not taking care of myself as much as I was last year. Eating better and going for runs had an enormous effect on my mood, I think if Iím going to stay off my medication Iím going to have to continue to do these things.

Not entirely sure why Iím writing this, but Iím sure there are other people on here who have had to deal with medication for depression + anxiety as well.

All I can say from my experience is:
  • Iíve always been better off following the doctorís advice, taking or discontinuing medication by myself has always led to trouble
  • If my current doctor doesnít understand me, or Iím having trouble talking to them honestly, itís okay to ask to see someone else that I can connect with more
  • If the medication doesnít seem to be having an effect, discuss it with the doctor! Doing nothing, or trying take matters into your own hand is a recipe for disaster
  • Medication is just one way to help you, make sure you keep an eye out for other things that might help! It doesnít have to be an either/or situation. If you want to explore finding ways to make you less anxious or depressed, then you can do that in combination with medication. I made a number of changes in my life, but for a while the doctor recommended that I stay on the medication

Stay safe everyone, and know that it gets better

Sound advice Xerxes.

That's great you're able to get off your medication and glad to hear you were able to do it with very few problems.

You mentioned some activities that are helping you. Keep them up!

Great going and wishing you continued success.

Thank you DPG1

I had trouble finding medication that worked, but when I did it helped me immensely. I came off because the doctor recommended it, but I'd go back on if I needed to.

that's great news, glad that you got off your medication.

Thanks dletond :) I'm glad too - not because I have anything against the medication, but not needing it anymore is a sign that I'm healing. I think the medication was indispensable for me at the time, but now I'm doing okay without it.

Congratulations, that is indeed a sign of your healing.
