How do I get hep for my young friend in Mexico?
I have a young friend, 19, who lives in Mexico City and is living with his parents and family, who are Mormons. He is gay and he feels very isolated. He talks about ending his life. He seems to feel that "no one can help him" in Mexico and he is very resistant to talk to anyone, but I have urged him to find help and gain friends or contacts who can assist him in dealing with the prejudice and feelings of being alone. We are in a romantic relationship. He has visited here three times in the past year. I live in California, USA, and have no way to help him from here. I am very worried and he has threatened to take drastic action if I tell his parents, who don't like me and, I am sure, blame me for their son being gay.

Does anyone have any experience with suicide prevention or gay youthcounselors in Mexico, and direct me to what resources are available to help him out? Thank you very much!!!!

Sorry but I don't know the first thing about gay youth counselors or suicide prevention in Mexico.

If he has a phone that can call the US, you can direct him to The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline here. I think it's listed in sticky in the Suicide section of this website.

Also, can he move out? Maybe move in with you?

Or can he just compromise and keep that aspect of himself private so that he can adapt to living with Mormons and in Mexico?

Hi Diego9320,

It is very kind of you to want to help your friend. Please encourage him to seek medical assistance as soon as possible. If he is in school he could perhaps talk to a student counselor or call the local medical facility. As he is an adult, he can see a doctor and therapist without his parents knowledge and consent. Here is some information about how to find suicide crisis centers and suicide hotlines:

We have an About Depression forum and a Suicide Prevention forum here on TTL, with some more information and tips about depression, how to deal with suicidal thoughts, and how to help someone else. If you want to post about LGBT issues, you are welcome to post in our LGBT forum. As he is struggling with issues related to his sexual identity, it sounds like contacting an LGBT organization could be a good idea. If you contact your local LGBT organization, they may be able to provide you with information about LGBT organizations in Mexico.

I found these sites searching online, and I hope they may help as well. However, I don't know them, and TTL is not affiliated with the organizations, so I don't know how trustworthy or useful they are.

Searching online yourself can provide you with more information, but I suggest contacting medical professionals, your local LGBT organization, and/or suicide support organizations. There is a lot of information online, and unfortunately not all of it is reliable. Please take care when you read information online, and if in doubt, talk to medical professionals about it.

Last but not least, please remember that you are not responsible for your friend, and please do take care of yourself as well. Talk to someone else about this, here and offline. We know that it can be very difficult to support someone on your own, and you don't have to deal with this alone. Seek help yourself, by posting here and talking to other people you know off the site, and encourage him to do the same.

You are very welcome to continue posting here, to seek support on how to help him, and to post about yourself as well. I am sure a lot of people would like to talk to you.

Best Regards,

Thank you for your information and support. I will relay this information to him and keep looking for people he can talk to or email.
