Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention

I am a huge fan of music. Not just rock or jazz or reggae, but all music. Music is a complex, deep, and very spiritual idea. Music used to only be a form of communication, especially really percussion-heavy music, because the sound of a drum could travel for miles. Now, music is used to convey more complex and abstract ideas. It's a different kind of communication.

I especially like music with contrasting rhythms and sounds ("polyrhythm" would be the technical term for it.) I'm not sure why, but complex music always spoke to me, and it still does, which is why I'm such a fan of old prog rock bands like King Crimson, Frank Zappa and the Mothers, and Pink Floyd. Because they constantly employed the use of polyrhythm (usually contrasting two percussion instruments or two very "deep-sounding" instruments, e.g. a bass guitar and a bass drum, so the bass would be playing in 7/8 and the bass drum would be playing in 13/8 [hypothetically]). Bands like KC and Zappa and the Motehrs always cheer me up when I feel really down, like I can't take life anymore.

So, if you're willing to give something new a try, then check these guys out...

Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention is an excellent "silly" band, especially for those into scatological humor and pointed cynicism, as well as some sexual material. Zappa was, himself, a fan of neo-classical music (I suppose you could call it "progressive classical," e.g. Edgar Varese and Igor Stravinsky), doo-wap, R&B, and what we now refer to as "classic" rock. Zappa was a composer, conductor, guitarist, singer, and bandleader for the Mothers, a band focused mainly on progressive rock. The Mothers occasionally made forays into the musical fields of blues, jazz, R&B, lounge music, and psychedelic noise (I really can't describe it any other way; to understand what I mean, buy their album "Freak Out!" and listen to the track "Return of the Son of Monster Magnet.") Frank Zappa also composed some neo-classical pieces, or had his rock pieces performed by a classical orchestra, which, needless to say, produced quite a funny stink. That's just a short biography. If you want to find out more, read about him on his website, http://zappa.com

Some good starter albums from Frank and the Mothers are:

-Sheik Yerbouti
-Freak Out!
-Apostrophe/Overnite Sensation
-Weasels Ripped My Flesh
-Shut Up An' Play Yer Guitar

Frank Zappa is a definite must for fans of psychedelic rock and classical music. Give 'im a shot, why dontcha?
