Default 5-HTP and Prozac

I got 6 free pills of 5-HTP pills from costco. My dad just took a bunch of the free samples. Each containing 100 mg. I guess I'll just take one pill every 6 hours and what happens. When I took Prozac (10mg), I REALLY didn't like it. Since this also increases serotonin, I'm kind of scared. Prozac made me feel bad very quickly. I felt sedated in the afternoon. Wide awake and anxious in the morning.

I have dysthymia and I read somewhere online that if patients in a study had a major depressive episode before the onset of dysthymia, they were more likely to be treatment resistant. So I think I might be medication resistant because I had major depressive episodes before I started to have dysthymia. Made me sad and hopeless.

Anyways, this year I started to feel better. I'm still depressed and sometimes think about suicide but overall, life has improved. Maybe this will help me more.

5-HTP probably won't cause the same symptoms as prozac did. You'd be much better off spacing out the doses over 6 days rather than 6 hours!!! Give ur brain a chance to adjust to the new levels of serotonin rather than flooding it over a very short space of time, which maybe could make you feel ill. I started taking 5-HTP a couple of weeks ago, overall I'd say no side effects but also not a noticeable improvement...

5-HTP is more of a food supplement, think of it as taking fish oil for healthy joints, rather than steroids. It might have the effect of increasing the amount of serotonin in your brain, and dopamine as a result, but will do so more subtly and naturally.

If you are taking medications, prozac, 5-HTP, whatever, you are looking at the effect after a period of about a month with regular doses, rather than what you feel like the day you start taking them. Most antidepressants make you feel more down, and give you side effects for a few weeks before having any positive effects.

Talk to the person writing your prescriptions before taking prozac and 5-HTP at once if you are considering doing that.

Another off the shelf supplement that is supposed to ease / prevent depression is fish oil actually - the stuff labelled as good for brains or IQ in your chemist.
