The thing is that when I do try to socialize & make friends I get treated like shit and in a very patronizing & condescending way. Of course this is in New England (Massachusetts) where people are extremely cliquey, stuck up, and act rude & hostile to anyone not in their little circle

I was diagnosed with Anxiety and Social Anxiety Disorder. That being said, while this was an interesting read, I don't think I have Avoidant Personality Disorder. A lot of those symptoms describe me, but I think they're a tad bit extreme to be a proper diagnosis for me.

Thanks for posting this thread, though; it was very enlightening! For reasons unknown to me, I really like learning about things like this. It's always extremely interesting to me! Thanks for expanding my knowledge of mental disorders.

You are welcome and you are right, avoidant personality disorder is more severe and more destructive than Social anxiety disorder

I started to see a psychologist a few weeks ago as I might have already said and so I am working on my avoidance and hopefully try to improve my life with time. I wanted to ask for advice: When I talk to new people online should I mention my problem to them or should I just keep it to myself? I don't want to scare people off and make them think that I am sort of of crazy person who should be in a mental asylum...

italmelb- feel free to mention whatever you please. This community is extremely strong and we love to help those who need it. It doesn't matter what state your life is in, no one is going to judge you. Suffering is suffering, we all have that in common.

Oh I don't mean on this forum by online, I know I can talk freely on here.
I mean when I chat to new people on regular sites that I might want to meet
for coffee or whatever...

Oh oh, I see now, that makes more sense. Well.. I'm probably not the best person to give advice on that particular topic, seeing as though I don't tell anyone about myself.

However, I don't really think you should come right out and say something that serious right away to someone you're just getting to know in real life. Maybe if you want to somehow bring it up without revealing anything about yourself, just so you can possibly get an opinion of it from them?
