Default Canning?

I figure this post will wander out here alone ... our world is just too fast.

But in case anyone else out there has tried it, I started canning a couple of years ago.

We have a peach tree (with a million peaches) and a zucchini plant (with a million small zucchini and one LARGE one I'm growing for the fair).

It took a lot to "get going" but now I have fun "putting up" foods.

Anyone else?

I really should get into canning! I've helped my mother can a few different things, but I haven't gotten into the habit of doing it myself. Salsa was always my favorite canned food to make (or perhaps I should say eat!), but canned peaches and tomatoes were used often around our house too.

Hi Numb - thanks for the comment. Oh, Salsa is a favorite of mine! I'm down to one jar at the moment. And I can make it JUST the way I like it!

BUT, it's going to be in the triple digits today ... so no heat in the kitchen!

I don't can anything, but I looooove home made strawberry jam, I could eat it by the spoonful, also, red pepper jelly, so delicious! ...Not the exact same as canning, but you still put it in a jar and heat it up! :p

Once I have my own place, I think I'll do some canning. :)

Blue Betty - there is nothing better than home made strawberry jam - and it's even better than canned, because you don't have to cook the strawberries and they are SOOOO fresh!

BUT, I also love making my own salsa ... I keep some fresh and can the rest for later.

****

I ended up taking 4 Red Ribbons and a Blue Ribbon - plus "Grand Champion" at the fair.

I can deer meat every fall, does that count?

It makes wonderful barbeque. The meat is so tender it just falls apart.

It looks kinda nasty in the jar but makes great sauces and barbeque.

And no wild taste at all.

I have never tried doing this but I would like to. My mum does though. She makes chutneys and jams etc. We call it bottling over here.

Down in Central and South America if you commit a crime they will haul you out to a public square and beat you with a wooden rod.

Oh wait, you guys were talking about canning, not caning! My bad. lol
