Default Anime

While I haven't watched anything since Angel Beats back over the summer, I still remember all the good times I've had watching anime. My favorites are Evangelion, Welcome to the NHK, Baccano!, and Darker than Black.

This thread'll serve mainly as a place to give recommendations (I could use some myself, lol) as well as talk about favorite shows.

Neon Genesis Evangelion will always be my absolute favourite. It was the first series that I watched from start to finish (apart from Pokemon >.>). I watched it with Japanese audio and English subtitles, and since then I watch all anime the same way - tis the only way!
Currently I'm loving...no..adoring Ghost in the Shell S.A.C - such great stories, awesome setting and Batou is so cool.
I'll also recommend Elfen Lied. Yeah, it's contrived, but so is a lot of anime. But it's artistic in its depiction of gore hahaha. The story is quite nice, too.
Can't think of any more for now...I haven't watched that many, to be honest.

I didn't bother with Lied. A friend of mine explained the idea of it and it didn't sound appealing. I couldn't get through the first episode of S.A.C. I loved the original movie, but I didn't like how they were doing the show. I'll probably try it again somewhere down the line.

I generally watch dubbed anime, even though I hate dubbed movies more than anything else in the world. I'll only watch a sub if the show has no dub or the dub is really, really bad (FLCL, for example). I loved Evangelion (although End of Evangelion might have caused my depression, lol). I think the dubbing was good, minus Spike Spencer's screaming. I laugh every time Shinji gets hurt or scared.

Have you watched the rebuilds? I loved 2.22, minus some things they changed (little things most people wouldn't notice), and cannot wait for 3.

Yes I did watch the rebuilds - they blew my mind! Partially because they looked excellent and..well...its Evangelion, but also because of how the second one ended! Wtf!?!?!
I own the first one, You are (Not) Alone on DVD. It came with a few making of featurettes which were very interesting. I can't wait for the 3rd either...that's when the series really starts to play with the mind.
I'll probably go back to watching the series over again some day.

I highly recommend going back to S.A.C - I was the same as you initially. I watched the original movie first and then decided to try the series. I didn't like how it was animated, I didn't like the personality changes in characters, I didn't like the whole "contained story" style...that was about 2 episodes in. But I returned to it recently and fell in love with it. It is just fantastic!

Cromartie High is probably one of the best anti depressants out there.

I was just about to bump this myself. I'm retrying Ghost in the Shell: SAC, and while I've only seen a few more episodes, I think I might give up again. The plot is interesting and all, but so far all of the characters are extremely robotic (not literally) and hollow. It's as if they have no emotions at all. This makes it really hard to watch for me.

One recommendation I forgot to make earlier is the first season of Gunslinger Girl (the second season is awful). While at first I thought it was gonna be aimed at the "lolicon" crowd, I was knocked on my back by how wrong I was.

I started watching Canaan off of netflix, and it's pretty good so far. There are only 13 episodes, but it's really quite attention grabbing.

I'm just tight that I still haven't found anything as good as Welcome to the NHK. I could really use another show similar to that.
