Default Obsession with numbers.

Does anyone else have an obsession with numbers, like me? I cant go through my daily life without being obsessed by the numbers 5 (bad) and 4 (good). If there are 5 of something, no matter how much i need it. i have to give one up. Like, if there are 5 of us on a night out, il make the effort to bring an extra friend, if that fails. il go home. I also have and obsession whereby i have to touch certain objects(lighters, desk, chair), a certain amount of times (normally 4, obviously) before i can leave them alone. This obsession is taking over my life and is starting to make me feel isolated. Does anyone else have the same kind of thing? Also, what do you think can be done about it? Im afraid if i talk to a doctor il stop these things which should be a good thing but they make me feel safe. I fear that if i stop, something bad will happen.

Hi Angel

I dont have obsession with numbers - but I went to cognitive behaviour therapy for my own obsession (prayers) and a couple of girls had number obsessions.

If it is disrupting your life where you are unable to function in the way you wish it might be a good idea to get your doctor to refer you - I know what hell it can be -

Yes - it makes sense - I think it would be good to go - because they can explain why you are thinking like this - so you know it doesnt make sense to obsess over the numbers - the fact that you are afraid if this obsession is taken away is a common fear - believe me - but it is worth going - to understand why it is happening - and to come up with other ways of coping - I know its hard but it helped me talking about it.

I have OCD too. It is not running my life like it use to. I still count by twos while in the car. I use to have to touch things a certain way and count while I touched them it drove me nuts. I thought if I didn't something bad would happen just like you think. If you break it down really your trying to stay in control of something you can't prevent from happening know matter how many times you touch the items if your fear is going to happen how can the items stop them?? It takes alot of mental energy to STOP!!!!! Instead of touching them 5 times try 4 than walk away and if your fear comes true go back and touch them 5, if your fear doesn't come true try 3 times. Your fear will NEVER happen!!! I hope this makes sense?

makes sense; my life has been hell for the past 7 years Basically I was expected to do quite well at Uni (seems like yesterday)- I had just lost my father to suicide and loads of other horrific stuff...

The university tried to push me into doing this competition for them that could have meant going abroad during my finals; I refused- they weren't nice- said I should do this competition for them if I wanted a good mark etc/a first (as I was predicted).

Any way the OCD part- I quite needed a first (I am from UK) because I had poor A-levels and the first gave me enough points to get on graduate career schemes... It's hard to get jobs after uni.

I started to obsess about every piece of work (heard them making disparaging comments in my head every time I tried to work). Eventually, I wound myself up so much I couldn't write a sentence- would read one page of a book 100-200x times. I honestly believed if I didn't get a first in X course, my mother would die like my father (just like during A-levels).

Ever since, I've struggled to work/repeat sentences in my head.

Sorry to go on about me- but I understand what it is like to be irrational- I'll read a book page 100x times.

Definitely get help before it gets out of hand... The longer it goes on, the harder it is to break. I had to repeat the year... It's put employers off me and sent my life out of control. Got the 'wretched first' at least LOL. Ended up isolated. I am approaching 30 and determined to now do something with my life. I've done research postgrad. (all delayed)

Most of my safe numbers are even, like you my favorite is 4. Yeah, 5 can just go to hell. I over the past few years it was kind of getting in the way of helping me recover from my anorexia. I'm really scared to talk to a doctor about this. I feels safe and comforting, because I feel like it's keeping me away from whatever is bad. So getting help would be a big step. I hope you soon find relief.

My numbers are 4, 8 and 16. They are good. Things like 9 or 19 or 29 etc annoy me as they have 1 missing. If I have say 9 coins, I will throw them away as they don't feel right. So round numbers are good also.
