Default is it ok for a man to like female-orientated things?

For instance, I really love Tori Amos's music, a couple of Alanis songs and some Florence and the Machine. But these are not manly things to like and I feel embarrassed to admit it to some people.

I see no problem for a man liking "female-orientated" things.

I like those singers too. I have also loved Enya's music too, which started when I was in my mid teens. Didn't care what my mates thought of it. Nothing girly about it mate. Its just music that you appreciate.

Women are devalued in society and seen as inferior underneath it all. Otherwise why would someone be embarrassed to like the same things women like? Meanwhile, women who are into the things men like, like football, working on cars, or playing the drums are applauded as the "cool girl." It's not your fault of course, it's just sad to reflect upon.

Things are changing a bit. You see men in pink shirts. Some men say they're feminists. It's a turn-on because it shows that the man is secure enough in himself to admit he's in touch with his feminine side.

Good point. I think you're right that attitudes are changing. It's in male-dominated spaces such as message boards that I feel embarrassed to admit I like these things. I have plenty of female friends who I can talk to about them because they're into the same things.

But we're talking again about rigid blue/pink lines of what it's expected a boy will like and what a girl will like.

Liking Enya was one of the few things my grandfather and I had in common.

(so this is more about me trying to fit in and not be laughed at than trying to be myself)

I hate gender roles and try my best to ignore them. I am a guy and I like cooking and shopping, I also enjoy Alanis's music.

Ok, let me ask you this: Who has right to decide what's right or wrong for you to do with your life? Let me tell you who: You have. So, you should ask yourself "is it ok for man to like female-oriented things?".
