I apologize in advance for my ignorance but while reading a book in which there is a gay character depicted, a line he mentions stood up in my mind because I have sort of heard it elsewhere.

Does the number 20% have any specific meaning?

Not that I'm aware of, but it's probably a reasonable guess what percentage of the population might be LGBT*. If I remember rightly, Alfred Kinsey's research found that 37% of men had had consensual homosexual experiences post school age, but other more recent studies have come up with much lower figures. 10% is often bandied around as the possible percentage of purely gay men, which from my experience seems plausible. And there are at least as many bi people as gay/lesbian people, probably more.

Never heard about that. It's really hard to pinpoint the percentage of folks belonging to LGBT. If you tell people you are making a survey, you draw more people from those groups than straights and if you don't, you are still faced with the stigma associated with it in a lot of places and a significant portion of people that would otherwise be part of it don't want to reveal it to anyone for fear of ostracization.

It's not exactly written in someone's face nor are there noticeable behavior related to it although like any group, there are some who feel compelled to innact stereotypes to get a sense of belonging.
