The fuck do we need a freedom of speech award for?

You're awarding someone for having an opinion? That's the fucking dumbest thing I've ever heard. She's every right as everyone else to have an opinion, but you don't see anyone else being awarded for it. It seems she's being given an award because she's a loud-mouth bitch. I mean, anyone else can be an ass as she was, but none of them are being awarded for it. Why? Because it's fucking dumb. All this seems to be is a chance for her to dis the LBGTQ community. She doesn't need to be accepting an award to do that.

Sorry... My depression is getting bad, and I get aggravated when I'm depressed. x__X

Don't be sorry! I'm completely with you! Fuck that bitch! I'm so sick and tired of all this goddamn homophobic bullshit! I don't know why these people have such a huge problem with it. It's not like we're going up to their kids and sprinkling them with some sort of "queer dust". We're just doing our own thing. Have you seen Canada's stance on the whole gay debate? God bless Canada; they don't give a fuck up there, everything's legal. If the US really wants to be the greatest country in the world, we'll make everything legal too.

It wouldn't help matters would it if I said the woman was good looking. (LoL) she'd probably freak out and try and hose us all down with lysol. Like *coughs* some other people(person) I've heard of.

lol! must fill others in on the joke.

i happen to know someone who is what we might call homophobic and who in referring to lesbians then commented "*where's the lysol*" thereby applying that lesbians are a species comparable to bacteria and other such infectious diseases.

*puts devil's advocate hat on*

i totally see why that makes you angry... what she said was offensive. however, i don't know the context of this competition, or the motives that people have for participating, but is it possible that those are not really her opinions, and that she was just picking up one of the most emotive topics she could, to make a point about what freedom of speech allows? because that is what we accept, unfortunately, if we accept freedom of speech - the people we vehemently disagree with have a voice too.

was it Voltaire who said 'I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it'? i think she pushed the permissible to its limit (arguably way past it)

*devil's advocate hat off* her best move would have been to say 'there, i made my point, are you happy now?' and politely decline such an idiotic award for just being outright offensive.

But if it was an issue that she had no opinion on, why would she bring it up? There are countless other topics she could have chosen.

She meant every word, sadly..
She's part of an organization working against the new marriage law that just passed here. The law gives gays the right to marry, and the same legal rights as heterosexual people to adopt kids. It also gives lesbian couples the possibility to get inseminated, just as non-fertile heterosexual couples have had for a long time. Monsen (the price winner) is against all this, and the organization she is a part of, the "mother, father and kid" organisation, is based on fundamentalist Christian religious perspectives.

The organization. "Fritt Ord" (Free Speech) is just choosing a person each year to get this award, given on their ability and efforts to contribute to the public discussion, and to promote free speech. A gay activist who has contributed enormously to the legalization of being gay, public acceptance, etc. got the award in the 70's. Her name is Kim Friele. She returned the award she got then as a protest against Monsen getting it this year. (She's one cool person, btw, I've met her. ) Friele also made a speech at the demonstration against the award.

Sadly, this price has made even more Christian fundamentalists and other people who are against the new marriage-law write hateful and homofobic articles in newspapers, etc. Even though we've got a new law, we have still a *lot* of work to do to change the views of people..

This is a link to a blog explaining a bit better than what I've managed here.. *lol* (Idk the writer, though).

I can't take any more of this. I'm sorry Mitza, but I have to unsubscribe to this thread before I get really pissed off.

That's terrible... and even worse that she has had some success in attracting others to take up the same protest.

But on the upside, Friele sounds like she really has her wits about her... so cool that she gave back her award - it must have meant a huge amount when she got it back in the 70s...

Yep, she even wrote a book about this subject... *argh*.. Luckily it's badly written.

Yes, Friele is mega cool, and she does have her wits about her.. I owe her a lot, shaked her hand and said thanks when I saw her at a lecture once. She inspires me to want to do more to improve lgbt's rights in society.
