In V For Vendetta
, V, the protagonist, comforts Evey, a young woman he has taken in, by giving a powerful speech. It was given after she escaped from prision where she was beaten and tortured daily in order for information about V. (spoilers, and i'm not saying what happens).
"Listen to me, Evey. This is the most important moment of your life, commit to it. They took your parents from you, they took your brother from you. They put you in a cell and took away everything they could take except your life. And you believed that was all that was, didn't you? The most important thing was your life, but it wasn't, was it?
"You found something else in that cell that meant to you more than your life. It was when they threatened to kill you unless you gave them what they wanted, you told them you'd rather die.
"You faced your death, Evey. You were calm, you were still. Try to feel now what you felt then."
