Hey guys!

I've only just joined up today.

I have been battling with depression since I was 16 (I turn 23 next month)

I'm not sure if this is the right place, but it's the closest I could find.

I want to get a tattoo...

I want a simple small symbol for my depression that I can colour in the colour of the rainbow to also symbolise (spelling) that I CAN get through this. Something similar to the below (but a symbol, not words, and better lol)

DEPRESSION

I want to be able to look at it and say "yes I have depression, but it WILL get better"

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Raindrops symbolize depression. So do dark clouds. You could very easily get a raincloud along with raindrops, and have it colored in with rainbow.

Ooo I like that!

Maybe I could have a dark/dull cloud with rainbow coloured raindrops?

Great idea! Thanks!

Anyone else?

How about the clouds and rain drops like sweet denial said and a rainbow shooting out of the cloud? I will look into it a bit and maybe post a pic if I find something that I think you might like....

Hey I found this on a forum you might like to read..... Some really good views I think...

"I actually have one that represents this myself. To me this struggle is of two aspects, a positive aspect (healing/ happiness) Vs. a negative aspect (depression/pain). This has always been a huge issue in my life, so when I thought of how to design my tattoo, I knew it Had to be a Big one..

First if I were you, I would think of representations of good, and bad. Maybe the good is a White Tiger, and maybe the bad might be A wicked looking Black Panther.. Now ask the question, "What are these representations doing?" Are they fighting a bloody battle for dominance? Is the bad winning? Is the good winning? If it's not, do you want it too?.. I would make this a representation of your inner struggle, and your True desires for the outcome..

If it were me, that That White tiger would be Stomping the Shxt out of that fierce Panther... I would probably use Eastern Asian traditional tattoo style for it. .. & and another thing.. Even if you don't feel like that white tiger is winning.. you can always look in the mirror at a tat like that, and Remember just who it is, that Ultimately controls the outcome.

Another thing that represents overcoming obstacles to me is change, and rebirth. Rebirth meaning that something has to Die/ be vanquished, for it to be born anew, and fresh.. (Changed). To me all things in nature represent this, especially plants.. Each year the beautiful blooms of plants wither and die.. lay dormant all winter only to bear their beautiful blossoms again, once the warmth has returned.. as it always does..

Also the tale of the mythic Phoenix may be of help to you in this quest.. This majestic bird lives through life ...a creature of incomparable beauty. As it grows.. it ages.. becomes weak. A shadow of it's former self.., frail, and exhausted it dies, by suddenly bursting into flames, leaving nothing but a pile of it's ashes behind. Tragic as it seems, as time goes on these ashes hold not sorrow, but the gift of new life. As in these ashes lays hidden a tiny egg.. almost ready to hatch, and baby phoenix ready to rise from it's own embers.. This is the cycle of the phoenix, and in it the representation of all natural life, good, bad, regeneration, and the lesson that all states of life are temporary.."

Yeah, I came across that too and was suprised at how many others want to do the same thing!

The raindrops I don't think will be hard, afterall they would just be raindrops the colour of the rainbow right? lol

It's the cloud that's stumped me. I can't find the RIGHT one.

Here are some clouds I found. I'm not too crazy about them...

I'm a fan of Japanese tattoos. Maybe these clouds can be incorporated?

I also like to Koi design. An it's symbolism is actually very close to what you are looking for... I am thinking of getting a koi myself...

KOI TATTOO - Probably surprising to many westerners is the large of amount of ancient myth that surrounds these beautiful fish in the Orient and their elevated status there. Generally known here as the brightly colored fish that are common in public ponds and fountains, carp (koi is Japanese for carp) can be found in colors that include white, yellow, gold, a deep orange, and some are even calico-colored. Particularly beautiful specimens have been known to fetch prices in excess of half-a-million dollars from private collectors who specialize in their breeding and showing. However, the koi is more than just a colorful and collectible fish. It is also one of the most popular and beautiful of Japanese tattoo symbols – a beauty which belies its symbolic meaning. Although Chinese in origin, the carp is now widely celebrated in Japan, particularly for its manly qualities. It is said to climb waterfalls bravely, and, if caught, it lies upon the cutting board awaiting the knife without a quiver, not unlike a samurai (warrior) facing a sword. This theme dates back to ancient China, where a legend tells of how any koi that succeeded in climbing the falls at a point called Dragon Gate (on the Yellow River) would be transformed into a dragon. Based on that legend, it became a symbol of worldly aspiration and advancement. Eventually, the stoic fish came to be associated with so many masculine and positive qualities that it was appropriated for the annual Boys' Day Festival in Japan where even today colorful, streaming koi flags are traditionally displayed for each son in the family. In tattoo imagery, especially in combination with flowing water, it symbolizes much the same: courage, the ability to attain high goals, and overcoming life's difficulties.
