I have been listening to a lot of music over the last few days and revisiting a lot of bands from my youth.
I got thinking about which bands inspired me and helped me through tough times as well as helping to shape who I am now.
So who has inspired you and why?
For me it is Joe Strummer of the Clash as well as a few other bands. He sang about what mattered when the youth had no jobs and he fought in what he believed in. At the height of his fame he was still talking to fans and letting them sleep on his hotel room floor when they came to see his gigs.
His anti-racist attitude also made me think as well. I grew up in a very rough racist area and I am pretty sure if it wasn't for his voice of reason at the time I would of ended up the same as everyone else in the area and join the national front. Even today I don't visit the town I grew up in because if anything it is worse than ever.
I regret never seeing him live and get a bit annoyed when I go on YouTube and see all the posts about him. To me he was a living legend and I followed him through his career but since he died back in 2002 everyone seems to have jumped on the band wagon, just seems strange someone has to pass away before their talent is recognized.
