Default Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli ( 1920-1995 )

The most perfect of all pianists ever was undoubtedly the Italian Arturo Benedtti Michelangeli. Notoriously difficult and fickle,he pursued a style of piano playing that can be best described as "crystalline". He possessed a truly phenomenal command of the instrument, unmatched by most of his fellow pianists.
Here is an ultra rare video footage from the fifties where one can see the master shortly listen to a student and then play himself.

PS Thank you guys !

Default Claude Debussy

Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune , one of Debussy's masterworks. Musical impressionism doesn't get much better than that.

Default Maurice Ravel

The other French musical giant from Debussy's era, though stylistically not an Impressionist ,was Maurice Ravel . I have always adored his works,( and have played everything of his music written for my instrument ) he is one of my musical Gods. Under his very polished and elegant surface there burns a raging fire....

Default Mozart Symphony Nr.29

This is one of his most charming works for orchestra. Even after listening to it for probably many dozens of times over the years that one work I ALWAYS look forward to listen to.

Default Jascha Heifetz

The argueably greatest violinist of all times ( and he had a fantastic sense of humour as well, see next posting ) here in an old film playing Saint Saens. Priceless, unique playing, his sound is different from any other violinist.
No gimmicks,no pretending, just glorious music making of the highest order.

Default Itzhak Perman

Despite severely handicapped Itzhak became one of the major violinists in the 20th century. Here he can be seen with the equally amazing Pinchas Zukerman performing that most famous of all Duo stunts the Haendel Halvorsen Duo for Violin and Viola. A truly uplifting clip !
