Default Pap smears

I haven't got my GP yet and am in the processing of trying them on and seeing how they fit. Since my favourite doctor retired last year I haven't been able to find a practise with a nice female doctor, who also bulk bills.

I made an appointment with this doctor close to me locally but when I saw her she was so old it was like talking to my nana. I had to fight the impluse to ask her if she was okay and enquire if she would like to lie down for a moment? I was more worried about her health than mine. The place was old and dodgy and she had the double role of receptionist and doctor. I felt like I was being punk'd and Ashton Kutcher would come out any moment.

I did not want to talk to her about my personal female issues but since I was already there in her office I felt like I had no choice. I managed to talk to her about the blood and urine test I wanted but when it came to the pap smear...which I was not looking forward to with any joy anyway she told me I should have sex a few more times because she probably would have difficulty inserting it.

I am not wise in the ways of sex thats for sure, 36 and have only had sex three times but since the last was traumatic enough for me and my body still hasn't bounced back.....I was just wondering is this normal advice from a doctor, should I not worry about the pap smear? And since my last sexual experience has put me off sex if not for good than atleast an eternity should I just forget about the pap smear altogether? I told her I was feeling pain and discomfort, imagining worse case scenerios of prolapsed cervix's and she just laughed at me. It took all my guts to bring up the topic of a pap smear, who knows if I will ever be that brave again.

Any advice would be appreciated.

think maybe you might try a new doctor.
she doesn't sound very professional, at least in your described experience.
it's wrong to tell a woman that about a pap smear, and Idk that it's true anyway. pap smears are always uncomfortable, I think, regardless of how much you've had sex.. some docs are worse than others though.
I had a new doc do one a couple months ago, and Idk if it was his first, but it was way worse than anyone else. most docs I've felt a bit uncomfortable for a few minutes, but that's about it.
I think it's beneficial to find a doc that you like.
but you did nothing wrong with asking for a pap smear. rather, it's a good thing you did. If yours looks 100% fine, women are supposed to get them every 2 years I think. stupid to make a patient feel bad about asking though. it's such a personal test..

Hi Strawbean, yeah I think I'll just wait now until I find someone who I feel relaxed with. Talking to this doctor was so weird and I felt so uncomfortable, she made me glad not to do the testing. I couldn't see how we could both live through the horror of it all. I'll continue to look around, hopefully I'll find someone soon.
