This is a discussion on Depression Help Groups within the Depression forums, part of the Depression Forums category; Does anyone have experience with going to a depression help group?
I just wondered what goes on here, and how ...
I went to 10 weeks of out patient therapy for my depression and at the time it helped me a great deal. It was great to be around other people that I could relate to as opposed to being around people who have no clue what's going with me and more often than not think I'm just plane crazy and shy away. My wife of 28 years divorced me and even my best friend of 20 years stop being my friend shortly after I became depressed so I would much rather be around people that at least have some understanding of what we are going thru.
That was 2 years ago and it was when I still had good insurance. I'm now on medical and it's much harder to get help as medications have never worked for me and there are no depression groups near me. I have not been to any groups since then and I'm more depressed then ever and think about suicide almost every minute of everyday and if I had a choice I would go to group therapy at least once a week.
Now if your the kind of person who has social anxiety then I could see how being in a group would be difficult but I do believe the benefits you would get from going to group therapy would out weigh your discomfort.
