Default Type-O Negative

Sometimes when I am really feeling bad I put on Type-O Negative and just lay in bed and listen to it. Some of their music is really dark, but it is very melodic and almost haunting at times.

I haven't had a loved one take their own life, but one song of theirs in particular, "Bloody Kisses", is about a lover's suicide and it is very intense.

It may not be for everyone, but when I'm reflecting on how I feel, Type-O is often in the CD player! Anyone else listen to Type-O?

Default A Question

Why do people listen to such sad and haunting music when they are feeling so down? Does it make it worse or relieve the pain? When I get depressed, I just sit in silence or (hate to admit this) I watch The Golden Girls. It is like mind-numbing chatter and laughter and I don't have to really engage with it, but I find myself getting caught up in it after awhile. That brief 30 minutes (or when I find 2 episodes back to back!) relieves my mind somewhat and gives me some freedom from thought.

Anyway - I'd love to hear your views and experiences about listening to the music when you are down.

Hi irishred,

Hard to say, really. Maybe for the same reason a heavy person who is unhappy with their body shovels ice cream while crying about it. I must say, I'm guilty of that, too. 8)

I don't know. Sometimes, when it hurts, it feels like it helps to just fully experience it... maybe listening to depressing music is a way of flushing it out. I feel like if I tried to stick a cork in my feelings I would hurt indefinitely, whereas by listening to depressing music I can feel what I need to feel for the moment and move on for the time being.

Does that sound crazy?

Nope, actually, it makes total sense to me now that I think about it. I always fear that listening to the depressing music will cause people to actually complete a suicide. As I thought about the music issue today, I realized I don't listen to rock and roll when I'm sad!

And, I agree that sticking a cork in your feelings would only make it worse. Well said.
How are you doing tonight?

Chris

I forgot to tell you that I listened to some tracks on the net today of Type-O Negative. I have to admit that I really liked them! Gruesome and sad, but a great haunting "good" sound, if that makes sense. I think I may be hooked. Who woulda guessed?

I'd never heard of this group either, but I downloaded some of their songs today. Thanks for sharing about it.

Default Another good one

Don't get me wrong, some of their music is close to garbage, but a few of them are just great. I think you guys would REALLY like their song "Love You To Death." Check it out and let me know what you think. I think it may be one of my favorites.

Can't say I've heard of them, Chris. I'll check them out, though.

Yes, "Love You to Death" is fantastic! I liked another one a lot, too, which I can't recall right now. I'll have to check and get back with you.
