Default Probiotics and Depression

I just posted this in another thread, but wanted to share it here as well.

Probiotics are huge in combating depression and studies have confirmed this..(as well as I can from my own personal experience). So, do some research and read on how the connection between the good bacteria in your gut and your brain are connected.

I posted a few links in the Depression News forum.

I heard the other day that lack of Vitamin B12 in the body can cause depression to get worse, is there any connection to this and probiotics? Also are they prescription or store-bought? I'm forever looking for alternative treatments as I think anti-depressants don't do that much good.

My problems are very good at hide and seek as well as cross country running.
I no longer try and run or hide from my problems.

"We all have bad days." I'm not having a bad day, I just never have good ones.

Actually, yes I've also heard about B12 for depression and a few other things, but I've never taken anything (prescription or non-prescription) for my depression up until these probiotics and I know I've hit something huge with these. I just managed without drugs this far and it has only been nothing short of a miracle if I am honest that I am even still alive to live another day to talk about all of this.

So, they are totally over the counter probiotics you can find in any health store, drug store, or grocery store. The brand I am using is "Natures Bounty" and I have no complaints at all, it is a very good brand .

Fermented foods are another way to go as well and I plan to look into that soon too. This connection between our gut and depression is mind-blowing now that I've been reading on it, but it makes soooo much sense now, it really does. Probiotics are good bacteria that is already found in our gut and there are apparently hundreds of strains of this good bacteria and some of us have what they call a 'leaky gut' and we need extra dose of the good bacteria.

The mind, body, soul connection is really real. Everything is really connected to everything and our digestive tracks apparently holds the key to fighting this depression and anxiety, it makes total sense now.

Did you read the articles I posted in the Depression News forum?

Not yet but I'll be sure to get round to it. That's great to hear though! I might give them a go, what price range are they within?

I definitely recommend giving them a try, you have nothing to loose. They are very inexpensive, some are no more than 10-14 dollars for a bottle of 60-100 pills.

Another thing, probiotics are measured by 'billions'. For instance, there are 1 billion active cultures usually found in one cup of yogurt, and the pills I take are 1 billion cultures per bill. I take 4-6 a day...Many people take much more than that and you decide on what works for you, but I recommend taking a minimum of 4 billion cultures per day..and I recommend that you get the probiotics that measure in the billions and not the millions so that you don't have to take as many.

It is suggested to aim for at least 1-10 billion a day generally speaking, but I am finding that 6 billion at a max for me is working just great.

I take 'Natures Bounty Strawberry Chewables' at 1 Billion per pill.

Sounds pretty good, I'll be sure to go out searching when I get paid! But do they have any side effects? Because I'm trying to lose a LOT of weight at the moment and I don't really want anything to hinder how well I've been doing.

No, no side effects.

Probiotics are nothing more than a natural good bacteria that is already found in our digestive tracks and also found in yogurt...So, no. If you are lactose intolerant of yogurt or dairy products, there is still not problem because it is only the bacteria that is found in yogurt in the pill, not the milk or dairy product itself.

So, you should be good.

That's good to know :) I'm not lactose intolerant but I do try and stay away from milk and yogurt due to the high fat content :p

I also heard that you should change brands every so often because each brand has different strains of bacteria and you it is best to change up to get the best results.

So, I've been on these for over 2 months now and in a month I am planning to switch brands.

I just saw this thread and I'm interested.

I have these cyclic "crashes". I usually respond by ingesting lots of sugar, which makes me feel better (at least in the short term). But I can see how sugar feeds bad bacteria while suppressing the good, so maybe that explains why my depression gathers momentum once it starts.

I have a problem with the TASTE of probiotics. I think yogurt tastes yucky. Are all probiotics like that?

I also had been taking weekly B12 injections. Maybe I'll start that again.
