Default Our body is a tool to combat depression.

Hi, I thought I'd come and update how my depression is lifting since changing my nutrition well eating habits, I would generally eat processed foods typical everyday diet of cooked foods, but as I said before not content with my doctor not being prepared to help workout where my lack of coping and depression was coming from I went out a quest to understand my body seeming as people around me weren't depressed and I was when and really didn't have particular reasons to be feeling so sad and lost and totally unable to find the love of living :o/ from my researching I believe I suffer with serotonine defiency and also just of late I believe I also suffer from protien defiency as to why my hair was falling out and splitting badly plus the itchy scalp and dry skin, so I changed my diet and started eating chicken soups, porridge, msm powder and cocoa nibs as a regular thing, my depression started improving, I wasn't crying everyday, and I actually had some energy, hair wasn't blocking my plug hole up and the itchy scalp stopped, this has lead me to research further into nutrition and now I am taking superfoods which are wheatgrass powder, chorella, sprulina, bee pollen, maca powder, camu camu powder, msm powder and cocoa nibs, goji berries not forgetting fish oil with but E but I'm incorparating it all in with the starts of a raw food diet where I have a fruit smoothie a day and a veggie green smoothie so I get all important enzymes that the body needs to restock. I still eat cooked foods but less of the pastries, white bread and surgury stuff. So far I have not cryed in long time feel like I can cope with any negative comments and actually a steady energy flow, been waking up feeling chirpy and finding loads reasons to smile, in general the best part is feeling like I can cope with things and finding the love of life again. I've read so much interesting stuff on how the foods we eat effect the workings of our body from the skin to the brain connectors and chemicals. This nutrition is helping my body heal it's self, thus healthier me thus my body is now vital to helping me funtion from the inside to out to the emotions and love I emit.
I can't say enough how much changing my food is helping heal my depression and I only hope that some of what I've written will help someone else or at least start a most and fasinating journey about food and nutrition and how it has the most amazing power to heal despite what doctors and the media don't tell us! I might add that also what has helped is listening to other peoples stories/ life journeys my gave being the myth and logic podcasts and short and sweet podcasts by David Wolfe. Having listened to things like this has given me a sense of being apart of everthing again :o) were all in it together right out to the farest star. XX

Thanks for the advice! But I've never heard of most of these foods! WHat are they and where do you get them?

Hey, I think it's so great that you have been able to combat your depression! Our bodies definitely crave good nutrition, and if we feed them the right things and engage in healthy amounts of exercise, we will be able to fight life's problems much more efficiently!

Hi Mask, ok the foods are called superfoods and just google superfoods and a wealth of info will appear and places you can buy them or ya should be able to get them from good health stores, and here are some explanations ive found off the net of each one I am taking -*

Wheatgrass:- *Wheatgrass contains all the elements that are missing in your body's cells - especially enzymes, vitamins, hormones, and nucleic acids. Wheatgrass has been proven over many years to benefit people in numerous ways including cleansing the lymph system, building the blood, restoring balance in the body, removing toxic metals from the cells, nourishing the liver and kidneys and restoring vitality.

Spirulina:-*As a health supplement, Spirulina algae is higher in protein than any other food source with a protein content of 60-70 percent higher than any other natural food.*Unlike other forms of protein, the protein in Spirulina is 85-95% digestible, one of the highest available. *Even greater nutritional value can be found in its high concentration of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and other beneficial nutrients which include the essential fatty acids, GLA fatty acid, lipids, the nucleic acids (RNA and DNA), B complex, vitamin C and E and phytochemicals, such as carotenoids, chlorophyll, and phycocyanin, which is a protein that is known to inhibit cancer.

Chorella:- *Chlorella is a natural Source of concentrated nutrition and is one of nature's true superfoods. Chlorella is considered a whole food, and it's rich in protein, caretenoids (astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, flavoxanthin, loraxanthin, neoxanthin and violaxanthin), enzymes (pepsin) and chlorophyll. It is great for detoxing the blood and flushes out such toxins as pesticides and mercury! Which is great as I have a mouthful of mercury fillings!

Msm powder:-*It is MSM's ability to make cell walls more permeable, which makes it an essential part of any detox programme. It allows toxins trapped within cells to be released. Some people may experience the negative symptoms of detoxification when starting to use MSM as toxins are flushed from the system. These symptoms may include headache and fatigue and generally the more intensely these effects are felt, the more toxins are being flushed. It is important to drink twice as much water as you usually do for at least the first 10 days of taking MSM, to allow the toxins to continue to be flushed effectively from your body.

MSM has shown promise for those suffering from arthritis or muscular pains. It is such a strong pain reliever that it was originally given to racehorses to alleviate muscular pains following a race. As MSM has been shown to be so safe, many people concerned about side effects of NSAID's (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen) have been taking MSM instead. Our bodies use sulphur to build new cells. When there is enough sulphur and Vitamin C available, we are able to build strong, healthy cells which replace old, tired ones. The only side effects of taking MSM are that you will develop softer skin, faster growing, lustrous hair and stronger nails. This is because MSM promotes healthy collagen and keratin, which are the essential building blocks for healthy hair, skin and nails.

Cocoa nibs :- this is my favorite i have instead of chocolate bars and sweets, I dip a banana in the nibs which brings out the choc flavour takes away the bitterness and adds a devine crunch! And if ya havin a night in with a loved *one and glass of wine nibble through some nibs and enjoy a very chilled outlived up evening! :oD
• Containing over 300 identifiable chemical compounds
• An abundance of natural anti-stress, anti-depressant and bliss inducing compounds, including Serotonin, Tryptophan, Anandamide, Dopamine and PEA.
• Cacao is also extremely rich in magnesium.
• Raw Cacao is approximately 4000% *higher in antioxidants than blueberries.

The antioxidant capacity of chocolate is well known, however the tradition of making chocolate with dairy inhibits these antioxidants. Because 'Raw' Cacao Nibs do not contain any dairy, the antioxidant capacity is greatly enhanced.
• Cacao is high in Magnesium which is known to increase the overall vigour of the heart muscle and decreases blood coagulation which lowers blood pressure and helps the heart pump more effectively, reducing the likelihood of blood clots and strokes.
• Magnesium also balances brain chemistry and increases brainpower; it helps to create strong bowel movements, reduces menstrual cramping, relaxes muscles, increases flexibility, helps to build strong bones and increases alkalinity within the body helping to open up over 300 different detoxification and elimination pathways.
In ancient times Cacao drinks were consumed after taking ceremonial hallucinogens like 'magic mushrooms' it is thought that Cacao contains MAO Inhibitors which prevent the body from breaking down the bliss inducing neurotransmitters like serotonin. This may be why when you eat raw Cacao one experiences feelings of bliss.

Maca:- *Maca Powder comes from the Maca plant which is native to Peru. It is a cruciferous vegetable from the carrot, radish and parsnip family. It has been cultivated and used by the Peruvians for several thousand years, both as a foodstuff and also for its medicinal properties.

Maca contains high amounts of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and all the essential amino acids. Maca is an adaptogen so it "adapts" to your body's metabolism and can help you achieve your optimal level of health and energy.

Small-scale clinical trials performed in men have shown that maca extracts can heighten libido and improve semen quality.

It has been presumed that maca's hormone-normalizing effects may be due to the root's unique nutritional profile, which provides optimum levels of nutrients utilized by the body's endocrine system.

Camu camu:- *Camu-Camu is a true 'superfood' from the Amazon rainforest

Camu-Camu is an Amazonian shrub that produces light orange coloured fruit that are the size of lemons and contain the highest concentration of Vitamin C of any food on the planet.

Camu-Camu fruit are also a source of Vitamins B2, B3 and Beta-Carotene, plus other important nutrients that aid in the absorbtion of the Vitamin C. Non-citrus, non-acidic and gentle on the stomach it's suitable for the whole family.

A non-citrus, non acidic source of Vitamin C, B2, B3 and Beta-Barotene.

Goji berries:- And then there is Goji berries!!! My most Benifical superfood in which I noticed a immediate difference! I started off soaking these in a glass of water over night and as soon as I woke up I drank the water they'd been in and then added the berries to a smootie or soup.

• High in antioxidants
• Goji berries have the highest content of Carotenoids, including Beta Carotene (a precursor to Vitmain A), among all known foods on earth.
• They contain up to 500 times more vitamin C than oranges.
• The fruits also have significant amounts of vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6 and vitamin E.
• They are rich in amino acids
• They contain trace minerals such as zinc, iron, copper, calcium, germanium, selenium and phosphorous.
• A handful a day is said to provide the energy to overcome difficult obstacles in healing, promote cheerfulness and brighten the spirit.
• They are high in antioxidants which have anti-aging properties.

“The goji berry is also legendary for helping to spark the passions. In fact, an old Chinese proverb cautions men who are travelling far from their wives and families:
“He who travels one thousand kilometres from home should not eat goji!”

My diet is trial and error it's just a case of finding what works best and there are so many other superfoods and foods i wish to try, but I can't recommend enough on how valuable nutrition is in relation to depression. I've learnt so much and there is still a wealth of knowledge to discover yet!*
I know now that every time I spoon processed food into my body I am liturally eating dead food and how can my body function proper when it's trying to deal with the stodge I put in it, then when it has sorted out the stodge it realizes it hasn't recieved much nutrition it goes and sources nutrition from the stores in my body making it weaker and old. If ya food is fresh raw and beautiful as the universe made it ya on to a good thing, look at animals for the biggest example. Have ya ever asked yaself where cows get their protien and calcium?
*It's big businesses that want us to eat their products be it milk, flesh and pies, it boils down to money like it does with the drugs doctors hand out,*and ya gotta fight back!!!! Do your research and understand you are amazing your body has the ability to heal itself, for me its been such a journey of discovery that ive been able to help my father along the way with his arthritus and a friend who has type 1 diabeties, did you know diabeties can be cured!!! and if you find those basic building blocks to understanding your body and it's needs you are on to a winner, your gonna be armed for what life throws at you and for me the events in my life which have fueled my depression I am coping with and able to live with now. *Again I truelly hope this helps someone else and if anyone gives nutrition a go please keep in touch and let me know how you get on!! *XX

Just wanted to thank you for your great posts - so helpful and informative.

I've traded in my usual dessert (a mountain of ice cream) for bananas and cocoa!
