Default What are the different types of treatment for EDs?

I know of Bevioural Cognitive Therapy and pills.
I need to know all of them and the most common/ popular methods of therapy/treatment and why they work.

I know of Interpersonal therapy- it deals with the way you interact with others and the way this makes you feel. Negative interactions can lead to negative thought paterns which in turn can manifest has an ED. It builds on self-esteem and self confidence which it is hoped will help people cope better with negative thoughts.

I know they often use group therapy as well, so that people in the same situation can all share there views and these can be challenged by the therapist. They help understand peoples fears which cause the ED and work on these. They can also involve family so that everybody has a good understanding of the problem and so everybody can support each other.

Default Hi Pink NY

Hi, I am bulimic (and depressed) and over the years, I have tried it all! However, I am just starting EMDR with a Psychologist next week. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a form of psychotherapy that was developed by a doctor (Dr. Francine Shapiro) in 1987 to alleviate distess caused by trauma. It is used for treating emotional difficulties caused by distressing life situations. It is commonly used to deal with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), however, studies show that it can be helpful with other disorders such as performance anxiety; pain disorder; social phobia; and poor self esteem.

EMDR is based on the premise that when someone is very upset, their brain does not seem to process info the way it is supposed to. Consequently, a disturbing memory becomes "frozen in time" and the sensations are continually re-experienced often with the same intensity as when the event first occurred. This can then trigger negative thoughts and emotions in present day living. These negative thoughts, emotions and sensations then block the individual from achieving important goals and living life with full confidence and strength.

EMDR is a process that engages our brain to send a message into the CNS (Central Nervous System) to release the info that is no longer needed --- such as the habitual negative feelings and false beliefs. These negative emotions and beliefs were often absorbed when we were much younger. EMDR serves as a developmental catch up and moves us rapidly through the past stuckness. This process can jumpstart our own ability to overcome blocks or barriers. EMDR clears the mind so that the disturbing past images, sounds and feelings are no longer 're-lived' when the original event comes to mind.

Go onto Youtube and watch a session of EMDR. I think that it is worth a try for me as I have been CBT'd to death!

A friend of mine was severely anorexic as a teen (ended up in a psych ward for EDs because of it). She had CBT and is still on ADs, though I forget which ones, but she's pretty much all better. It worked for her at least.
