I had it explained to me a long time ago so don't quote me but I believe the only way you remember your dreams is if you wake during the sleep cycle that dreaming occurs in. I don't believe you are supposed to actually wake up during this sleep cycle.

My theory on dreams is that you aren't supposed to remember them. My reasoning for believing this is for 2 reasons. You only remember them if you wake up when you aren't supposed to (don't quote me). My other reason is that a lot of the time when you do remember a dream for some reason later that day you can't remember it a lot of the time.

Yeah Ive heard exactly the stuff, and it makes sense to me. apparently we dream every night, its ironically a thing that is supposed to help us remember things, but we can never really remember them. I dont think we are intended to consiously experience them, but they are interesting as an insight into what it is your mind sees as important.

And realize I made up everything

Poor dream recall is a symptom of pyroluria, a genetic defect that causes anxiety and depression. I never could remember my dreams, I did not even dream in colour and as far as my Dr is concerned, I am not fully cured until I dream every night and can recall them. I do have other reasons for anxiety and depression ,but the pyroluria was mild and easily rectified.

You'll generally only remember a dream if you wake up during or right after it "finishes". Your brain deletes the info on the dream very quickly after it occurs, as most dreams are just nonsense mashups of information your brain makes up during the night. Even if you remember a dream, unless you actively rehearse what happened in it in your mind, you'll forget it as the morning progresses.

It could also be possible you simply aren't getting into a deep enough sleep to dream. If you wake up feeling tired, this might be worth looking into.
