Default Maurice Ravel: Pavane

This is one of the most beautiful works Ravel ever wrote, composed in 1910.
The title "Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte" ( Pavane for a dead princess ) he chose for the reason that the title sounded beautiful language wise. Ravel was one of the great "masked" composers: beneath a seemingly polished and cool surface is a hot volcano buried. The beauty comes from the restraint and poise of his music.

Thanks Dave. I go along with Oscar Wilde ,who didn't even lose his wit on his death bed: " Either these drapes go or I will ".

But this is the depressing music blog ( sigh ) ,so here is one of the most melancholic arias in opera history from Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell.

Default Chopin Opus 66

Chopin's so called "Phantasie-Impromptu" one of of 4 works with that title. It means a sort of on the spur of the moment improvised piece without too great formal constraint. The greatest works in that genre are the 8 Impromptus of Schubert ( Opus 90 and Opus 142), the 4 Impromptus by Chopin and the 5 Works by Gabriel Faure.
They are all gems and seemingly uncomplicated, but actually pose great challenges for interpretation. I have never heard a better version of Chopin's Opus posth. 66 than this one, with Spanish pianist Alicia de Larocha.
Notice the beautiful LP sound !!

Default Last things

Leonard Bernstein's last concert ever with his beloved Vienna Philharmonic with Anton Bruckner's ( 1824-1896) last symphony ( "dedicated to God" ).Here is a short excerpt from that Gargantuan work. It's not for entertainment any more, this music is far more than that. Bruckner was a deeply religious man and his monumental symphonies struggle with that God of his. It's an epic struggle which gave us some of the most hair raising symphonies in the wide world of classical music. If you enjoy it go for the whole thing, there are plenty of great videos on you tube. This is only a short appetizer.

Default Sergej Rachmaninoff (1873-1943 )

The archetypical melancholic composer was Sergej Rachmaninoff. Composing in late romantic style until his death in 1943 he was no modernist ,but evoked the golden era of romanticism. Personal circumstances ,he had to leave Russia for good in 1917 ,suffered severely from depression, influenced his artistry. One of the key interpreters of his music is the legendary Svjatoslav Richter,Russia's foremost pianist. Here is a Prelude from the Opus 32 series, recorded live during a recital in Moscow.

Default Pathetique (Tschaikowsky )

The most tragic of all symphonies ever. The last movement is one big journey into total and unrelenting despair. No solace here. Just the most heartachingly beautiful music though, and a reminder about the profound depths of classical music. Tchaikovsky symphony No.6 -4M (4/4) V.Gergiev Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra - YouTube

Thank you for this DJ Mozart. Really relating to this tonight.
Can really feel the pain in this. Tchaikovsky so much more
than just the nutcracker that people know.
