Don't let your computer catch you off guard!
I worked at least 5 hours applying collor and shading to this picture, but now the original file is unreadable, so all I can show you is this screenshot of a pixilated thumbnail.
Last night, I opened the high-rezolution image, which I had worked on for 3 hours on a previous night. I worked for about 1.5 hours, then saved. Half an hour later, I did a save-as. Now, BOTH of those saved files are unreadable.
If you have a computer like mine, which corrupts files without warning on a regular basis, you have to outsmart the software you're trying to use. Saving often IS NOT ENUF! Using save-as is not enuf. You have to select the canvas, do copy, make a new file, and use paste, and then save those new files in different folders. You can never be too careful. On my computer you can never be careful enuf! I thot I was being cautious making extra saves, but they all got corrupted, so I lost about 5 hours of work. Now I have to start over from the raw scan (since paper doesn't get corrupted).
I cannot stress this enuf: YOU CAN NEVER BE TOO CAREFUL! Make SEPARATE copies. You can always delete them later.
