Default Making eye contact with pedestrians

I don't know if this exactly fits in anxiety but it makes me feel anxious and uncomfortable.
Whenever I drive by someone walking on the side of the road and I look over at them, it seems like 9 times out of 10 they'll be looking right at me and we make eye contact. I know when I'm walking I never even bother to look at the drivers passing me unless I'm waiting to cross or interact with them in some other way but it just seems to happen way too much when I'm driving. Does anyone else experience this or am I just being paranoid?

I sometimes feel odd in that situation too, but I'm usually the one walking rather than driving. Sometimes the passing cars are the most interesting thing to look at in that moment, it's nothing personal or anything! ;) Instead of avoiding eye contact and feeling uncomfortable, I find the best thing to do is to actively try to make eye contact, and then wave to the person - simple, and feels good! Of course, I'm in the country... doing that with everyone in the city would get a bit tiresome.

i know what you mean. when it happens it just feels so weird like as if they looked at you b/c they knew you were looking at them. it's really all on in your head and maybe a way to minimize this weirdness is just to pretend to be absorbed in your surroundings and imagine the person in the car is just as absorbed in whatever he/she is doing- driving or talking to a friend. if you do make eye contact just give a big smile- it's not so hard if you try it :)

Pedestrians? I can't make eye contact with anyone, I feel like they're staring me down.

In my own neighborhood people tend to turn away when i go out for a walk or job. Its kind of insulting, but people some people look at me and i smile and greet them. A town over if you make eye contact with people a large portion of the community will try to sell you drugs or will start trouble if youre not minding your own business. I never stare down people or even look at people unless they look familiar while driving.

Humans are generally social, and some might take the time to look and say hi. I just ignore everybody... Like, I don't want them looking at me, why the fuck would they look at me and why would I acknowledge them, ya know? I just take it offensive if a stranger looks at me.

I used to have a problem picking up hitch hikers (in the hopes that they would kill me). I told my family about it and they told me to stop. Ever since then when I see someone walking my heart starts to race and I feel incredibly guilty. Especially when they look at me. I feel like they are judging me for having a car while they have to walk. I know it's not the same thing but I'm hoping the feeling will pass over time.

I experience this everyday! I won't even turn my head to see who is next to me for fear of seeing that persons face. And on the street if I am driving I just assume everyone is looking at me through my window. It doesn't bother me anymore, but I still always have that feeling it's just not bothering me.

However when walking on the street or in malls or public places I can't make eye contact with people walking nearby or at cash registers.

I think it has something to do with when I was little my mom would push me towards counters and make me ask the cashiers questions for her since she couldn't speak english. She didn't understand I was shy so she would force me and embarass me in front of strangers. maybe yours is coming from something like that too?

I use to have a huge problem with eye contact. Then as I worked on myself I got better with it. Now when I find that I make eye contac with people, I just smile and suddenly I feel more relaxed and usually I get a smile back. It makes me feel more 'normal'. If i start having uncomfortable feelings later, I just try to talk myself out of it. Some times it works, other times it doesn't, but that is just how it tends to go.
