Default Worst Advice You've Been Given

What is some of the worst/least helpful advice you've gotten as someone who struggles with mental illness. And how do you respond?

Stuff like -
It's all in your head
If you just exercised...
Get over it
Other people have it so much worse than you
You're not trying hard enough
Just distract yourself
Do you even want to get better?
Change your attitude
Just focus on the positive
Everyone feels ____ sometimes
You're lazy
You're not the only one

I especially love "its all in your head." Like no shit? The definition of mental is "of or relating to the mind." So yeah, the illness is in your head.

I've heard every one of these. As it turns out, every person I heard anything like this from I eventually parted ways with. I think I got lucky in that aspect.

I don't surround myself with people enough to really be able to add anything, but the "you're not alone" one bugs me, because I even hear mental health professionals say it. I get what they're trying to say but it's hard to say that without it sounding like "your problems aren't real, everyone else goes through this."

Yes, exactly! And I get that they're trying to say that it's okay to be going through this because other people have too, but instead it sounds like "I'm not going to help you with it, I'm just going to point out that you're not alone."

"Don't isolate."

I'm an introvert. I don't like being around people when I feel good.

are you trying hard enough to help yourself?

If I knew what was enough to help myself I fucking wouldn't need anyone now would I?

The "think positive" nonsense.

The entire world does not need to be composed of the aggressively cheerful.

You're young, you'll adjust, keep believing things will get better & they will. Whatta crock!!!
